Scholarship offers by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates

The DAAD is a joint organisation of German institutions of higher education. Our aim is to promote academic cooperation world wide, especially through the exchange of students, scholars and scientists. To achieve this, we offer information and advice and a number of support and scholarship programmes. DAAD is a non-profit organisation which is largely financed by Germany’s federal government. For more information, please visit www.daad.de

The DAAD-research grants for Doctoral Candidates provide young scientists with an opportunity to carry out a doctoral research project or a doctoral programme at a German higher education institution or research institute. DAAD offers two kinds of these scholarships for PhD-candidates:

  1. Scholarships for three years research of a PhD-candidate in Germany under the supervision of a German professor. The doctoral title in this case is awarded by the German university according to its rules and regulations.
  2. Scholarships for the „sandwich model“, i.e. for research stays between 12 and 24 months at a German university for PhD-research. In this case, the doctoral title is awarded by the Malaysian university according to its rules and regulations. The German professor who is supervising the research stay in Germany could e.g. act as a secondary or co-supervisor.

Applicants should hold a good Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Most important is a convincing research proposal and a well established contact to a German professor / academic supervisor.
